This week’s picks feature a mixture of classics, a world premiere, and two rarely performed works. There are some role debuts and other stars performing signature roles.

Frankenstein – La Monnaie du Mont, Belgium

Mary Grey’s new opera makes its world premiere at the prestigious Belgium theater in a new production by Alex Ollé. Scott Hendricks takes on the title role with Baseen Akiki conducting the harrowing score.

Otello – Opéra de Paris, France

Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak star in the leading role of Verdi’s masterpiece. George Gagnidze and Frédéric Antoun round out the cast with Bertrand de Billy conducting Andrei Serban’s production.

La Scala di Seta – Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman

Marina Monzo and Paolo Bordogna star in Rossini Opera Festival’s production of the rarely performed Bel canto work. They are joined by Pietro Adaini, conductor Ivan Lopez Renoso, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Gioachino Rossini. The production is by Damiano Michieletto.

Don Giovanni – Teatro Principal la Palma, Spain

Nicola Ulivieri star in Mozart’s most iconic opera with Ugo Guagliardo, María José Moreno, Giovanni Sala, Simon Lin, Ainhoa Arteta, Susana Cordón, and Tomeu Bibiloni. Cristóbal Soler conducts Paco Azorín’s production.

Hamlet – Gran Teatre del Liceu, Spain

Carlos Álvarez and Diana Damrau perform a concert performance of the rarely staged “Hamlet” by Thomas. Both stars in their role debut are joined by Celso Albelo, Nicolas Testé, and Eve-Maud Hubeaux. Daniel Oren conducts the final performance.

Lucia di Lammermoor – Opernhaus Zurich, Switzerland

Venera Gimadieva sings Donizetti’s masterpiece in Damiano Michieletto’s production. Ismael Jordi is her lover Edgardo with Roman Burdenko as Enrico and Wenwei Zhang is Raimondo. Nello Santi conducts.
