Leon Botstein to Step Down from Bard College Following Independent Review Into Ties with Jeffrey Epstein

Leon Botstein has announced he is stepping down from the helm of Bard College.

The news comes after Bard College did an independent review regarding the conductor and teacher’s contacts with Jeffrey Epstein.

According to the Guardian the review found that “the college president’s frequent interactions with the convicted sex offender ‘could have alerted’ him to the possibility that he and Bard would be facilitating Epstein’s abuse of women.

“The investigation also found the Bard president made about 25 visits to Epstein’s townhouse as well as a two-day visit to Epstein’s Little St James Island. There were also two visits by Epstein to Bard. According to WilmerHale law firm, who investigated the case, these visits included ‘multiple women’ who have since been identified as victims of Epstein.

“The WilmerHale review also suggested that Botstein had been warned by a senior faculty member that he should not engage with Epstein. However, Botstein did not listen and noted that ‘an ordinary sex offender’ like Epstein could be presumed to be rehabilitated.

“The firm noted that Botstein argued that Bard needed funds and reportedly said ‘I would take money from Satan if it permitted me to do God’s work.'”

The review also noted that Botstein accepted fees under a consulting agreement with an Epstein entity in 2016, but did not disclose the agreement to the board on the grounds that he intended to donate those funds to Bard. It also showed that Botstein extended multiple invitations to Epstein including a stay at Bard’s guest cottage, attending a concert by conservatory students, and a visit to Bard High School Early College.
