Theater Erfurt Cancels Ring Cycle Due to Financial Struggles

By Francisco Salazar

The Theater Erfurt has canceled the Ring Cycle due to financial struggles.

The German company said that it would showcase the production of “Das Rheingold” this season as planned, but all further installments of Wagner’s tetrolgy were being put on hold.

The company added that the planned production for the 2024-25 season will be replaced by Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio “Elijah.”

This is the latest setback for the theater which put its general Director Guy Montavon on a temporary leave of absence following accusations of sexual assault and abuse of power. In December 2023, the company’s Music Director Alexander Prior resigned for Personal Reasons, only two years after he was named Music Director of the company.

According to Zeit Online, the city already imposed a spending freeze of one million euros on the theater for 2024 and the house has run into a deficit of around three million euros due, among other things, to poor attendance and higher personnel costs.
