Theater an der Wien Extends Intendant’s Contract

The Theater an der Wien has announced it will extend intendant Stefan Herheim’s contract.

The company said “We are pleased to announce that the city of Vienna, together with the Vienna Holding and the VBW, have decided to extend the contract of Stefan Herheim until fall 2030 and continue the much-regarded program line of his intent.”

Herheim added, “It is a great pleasure for me to artistically lead the MusikTheater an der Wien for the next five years. Both in the newly renovated main house at the Naschmarkt and in the Chamber Opera, our name program and the Stagione operation are a guarantee for what we absolutely want to offer our audience: a contemporary, varied, demanding and entertaining connection of music and theater. And with up to 13 premieres per season at the highest international level! ”

Herheim took over the positionduring the 2022-23 season. As a sought after direct Herheim has direct productions at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Glyndebourne Festival, Komische Oper Berlin, Dutch National Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Salzburg Festival, and Norwegian National Opera, among others.
