Anna Catarina Antonacci, Roberta Mantegna, Jacquelyn Wagner & Andrè Schuen Lead Theater an der Wien’s 2023-24 Season

The Theater an der Wien has announced its 2023-24 season featuring opera productions and opera in concert.

Opera

Jérémie Rhorer conducts Donizetti’s “Les Martyrs” with Cezary Tomaszewski directing. Roberta Mantegna and John Osborn lead the cast, which also includes Mattia Olivieri, David Steffens, Nicolò Donini, and Patrick Kabongo.

Performance Date: Sept. 18-28, 2023

Philip Venables’s “Denis & Katya” will star Hasti Molavian and Timothy Connor. Anna Sushon conducts and Marcos Darbyshire directs.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27-Oct. 12, 2023

Jacquelyn Wagner stars in the title role of Handel’s “Theodora.” She is joined by Christopher Lowrey, David Portillo, Evan Hughes, and Julie Boulianne. Bejun Mehta conducts and Stefan Herheim directs.

Performance Dates: Oct. 19-29, 2023

Weinberger’s “Schwanda, Der Dudelsackpfeifer” will star Andrè Schuen, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Pavol Breslik, Ester Pavlu, and Krešimir Stražanac. Petr Popelka conducts the production by Tobias Kratzer.

Performance Dates: Nov. 18-28, 2023

Clemens Flick conducts Mozart’s “La Finta Giardiniera” in a production by Anika Rutkofsky. Paul Schweinester, Carina Schmieger, Adrian Autard, Michaella Cipriani, Valerie Eickhoff, Elisabeth Freyhoff, and Anton Beliaev star.

Performance Dates: Dec. 1-22, 2023

Knussen’s “Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen” will be conducted by Stephan Zilias and directed by Nikolaus Habjan. Jasmin Delfs, Katrin Wundsam, Peter Kirk, Zoltan Nagy, Matthias Hoffmann, Martin Summer, and Angelo Konzett star.

Performance Dates: Dec. 16-27, 2023

Marin Alsop conducts a new production of Bernstein’s “Candide” by Lydia Steier. The production will star Matthew Newlin, Nikola Hillebrand, James Newby, Ben McAteer, and Helene Schneiderman.

Performance Dates: Jan. 17-Feb. 3, 2024

Luciana Mancini sings the title role in Piazolla’s “Maria de Buenos Aires” alongside Jorge Espino, and Daniel Bonilla-Torres. Juana Inés Cano Restrepo conducts.

Kirill Karabits conducts Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” in a production by Marie-Eve Signeyrole. Mélissa Petit and Julien Behr sing the title roles with Daniel Mirosław, Leon Košavić, Svetlina Stoyanova, Brett Polegato, and Brian Michael Moore.

Performance Dates: Feb. 23-March 5, 2024

Salieri’s “Kublai Khan” will star Carlo Lepore, Lauranne Oliva, Alasdair Kent, Marie Lys, Äneas Humm, Fabio Capitanucci, Giorgio Caoduro, and Ana Quintans.

Moultaka’s “Hamed und Sherifa” will star Tobias Hechler, Timothy Connor, and Johannes Bamberger. Viktor Mitrevski conducts the production by Florian Drexler.

Michael Boder conducts “Freitag, Der Dreizehnte” and Johannes Erath directs. Christine Schäfer and Magdalena Anna Hofmann star.

Purcell’s “Richard III” will be conducted by Benjamin Bayl and directed by Kateryna Sokolova. Christoph Filler, Fabian Tobias Huster, Louise Kemény, Martina Neubauer, Johannes Bamberger, and Antoine Amariu.

Opera Concerts 

Mayr’s “L’Amor Coniugale” will be conducted by David Stern and will star Chantal Santon-Jeffery, Natalie Pérez, Andrés Agudelo, Bastien Rimondi, Adrien Fournaison, and Oliver Gourdy.

Performance Date: Sept. 24, 2023

Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin” will be performed by Florian Boesch.

Performance Date: Nov. 23, 2023

Galuppi’s “La Caduta di Adamo” will be conducted by Aapo Häkkinen and star Ivana Lazar, Aco Bišćević, Liliya Gaysina, and Sonja Runje.

Performance Dates: Dec. 18, 2023

Handel’s “Aci, Galatea e Polifemo” will be conducted by René Jacobs and star Kateryna Kasper, Sophie Harmsen, and Andrea Mastroni.

Performance Date: Jan. 25, 2024

Véronique Gens stars in Lully’s “Alceste” with Cyril Auvity, Camille Poul, Luigi De Donato, Juliette Mey, Claire Lefilliâtre, Cécile Achille, Geoffroy Buffière, Luc Bertin-Hugault, and Léo Vermot-Desroches. Stéphane Fuget conducts.

Handel’s “Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno” will be conducted by Rubén Dubrovsky. Nikola Hillebrand, Sophie Rennert, Terry Wey, and Josh Lovell star.

Anna Catarina Antonacci stars in Poulenc’s “La Voix Humaine” will be conducted by Michael Balke.
