Theater an der Wien Announces Conductor Change for ‘Tosca’

By Francisco Salazar

The Theater an der Wien has announced a conductor change for its upcoming production of “Tosca.”

The company noted that Ingo Metzmacher is ill and, as a result, Marc Albrecht will replace him on the podium.

Albrecht, who has won several international awards, is best-known for his interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Zemlinsky, Schreker, and Korngold. He recently won the “Conductor of the Year” at the International Opera Awards and the Opus Klassik as “Conductor of the Year.” “Tosca” will mark the return of Albrecht to the Theater an der Wien following his participation in the production of Henze’s “Elegy for Young Lovers.”

Albrecht will conduct Martin Kušej’s new production which will star Kristine Opolais as Floria Tosca, Jonathan Tetelman as Mario Cavaradossi, and Gábor Bretz as Scarpia.

“Tosca” opens on Jan. 18 and will run through Jan. 28, 2022.
