
Brittany Smith & Lukhanyo Moyake to Headline Cape Town Opera’s ‘Roméo et Juliette’
By David SalazarCape Town Opera is set to present Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” this November.
The production, set to take the stage at the Artscape Theatre starting on Nov. 18, 2026, will be directed by Marcus Desando, a South African opera singer and arts administrator who has performed in more than 75 opera, musical theatre and concert productions internationally and has directed more than 40 productions.
The opera will star Brittany Smith as Juliette and Lukhanyo Moyake as Roméo. Also featured are Nonhlanhla Yende as Gertrude and Conroy Scott as Capulet, along with Judith Neilson Young Artists Nica Reinke as Stéphano and Dumisa Masoka as Benvolio. The cast also includes Msimelelo Mbali as Frère Laurent, Thandolwethu Longo as Tybalt and Riaan Hunter as Mercutio. Design is by Leopold Senekal.
Kamal Khan will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for the run, which runs through Nov. 29, 2026.
The production is sung in French with English and isiXhosa subtitles.
