The Voice of Black Opera Announces Five Finalists

U.K.’s The Voice of Black Opera has announced its finalists.

The five singers who will compete at Birmingham Town Hall on Dec. 5, 2022 include soprano Rachel Duckett, mezzo-soprano Chantelle Grant, tenor Thando Mjandana, soprano Yolisa Ngwexana, and soprano Isabelle Peters. These artists were selected from the semifinals, which took place on Nov. 24 and 25, 2022.

Each artist will perform at least one contemporary song or aria by a Black or South Asian composer as well as a duet with other professional singers.

The judging panel will include Aidan Lang (General Director of the Welsh National Opera), Stephan Meier (Artistic Director of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group), tenor / vocal coach Jean Ronald La Fond, composer Philip Herbert, writer/critic Rupert Christiansen, and composer/conductor Odaline de la Martinez.

The winner will receive the Sir Willard White Trophy and a 10,000 pound cash prize as well as repertoire coaching with music staff of the Welsh National Opera, and a concert performance with the Welsh National Opera Orchestra.

Second place will take home the Samuel Coleridge Taylor Award, 5,000 pound cash prize, and three vocal performances of a new work by Daniel Kidane with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.
