The Thirteen to Open New Season with ‘On That Distant Day’
By David SalazarThe Thirteen Choir & Orchestra will launch its fourteenth season, “Kaleidoscope,” with three performances of “On That Distant Day.”
The concerts, taking place October 17–19 in Alexandria, Washington, D.C., and Bethesda, will feature Duruflé’s “Requiem,” Palestrina’s “Missa Papae Marcelli,” the North American premiere of Frank Martin’s “Cantate pour le 1er Août,” and Diedre Robinson’s “Kyrie.” The Thirteen will be joined by Princeton University organist Eric Plutz.
“These works provide different lenses through which to view common themes — triumph through adversity, the search for clarity, and the persistence of beauty in turbulent times,” said Artistic Director Matthew Robertson, per an official press release. “It’s a fitting way to begin our fourteenth season, which celebrates boundary-defying programming as part of our identity.”
As part of its commitment to expanding access to live music, The Thirteen has also announced its new “Kids Come Free” initiative, which invites children ages 5–17 to attend performances free of charge when accompanied by a ticketed adult caregiver.
The opening show on the 17 will take the stage at the Virginia Theological Seminary, with the performance on Oct. 18 set to take place at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. The final show will take place at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD.
