William Kentridge’s ‘Sibyl’ Set for New York Premiere at Powerhouse: International in Brooklyn
By David SalazarWilliam Kentridge’s “Sibyl,” a two-part multimedia production is set to make its New York premiere at POWERHOUSE: INTERNATIONAL on Oct. 8–11, 2025.
The work features music composed and conceived by Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Kyle Shepherd, and will be presented at Powerhouse Arts in Gowanus Brooklyn.
“Sibyl” unfolds in two parts: “The Moment Has Gone,” a film accompanied by Shepherd’s live piano score and an all-male chorus directed by Mahlangu; and “Waiting for the Sibyl,” a chamber opera that reimagines the ancient Greek myth of the Sibyl through 10 singers and dancers. Kentridge’s previous production of the work earned him the 2023 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for its visionary conception and direction.
The work premiered in 2019 at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and has had subsequent performances at the Barbican Centre in London, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House, among others.
