The Schubert Club Announces Next Artistic & Executive Director
By David SalazarThe Schubert Club has that Kyu-Young Kim will be its next Artistic and Executive Director.
Kim succeeds Barry Kempton, who will step down on June 30, 2026 after nearly 15 years of leadership. A violinist and arts administrator, Kim has served the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) as Principal Violin since 2011, Senior Director of Artistic Planning from 2013 to 2016, and Artistic Director from 2016 to 2024. During his tenure at the SPCO, Kim oversaw programming of more than 100 concerts annually, appointed 10 new artistic partners, commissioned 50 new works by a diverse range of composers, and helped the orchestra win a GRAMMY Award for its recording of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden.” He also launched initiatives including the Sandbox Composer Residencies and a free HD video concert library featuring more than 120 works.
“I am thrilled to take over the mantle of Schubert Club, one of the nation’s finest classical music presenting organizations, and a true community asset,” Kim, who has lived in the Twin Cities for 20 years and currently serves on the violin faculty of the University of Minnesota School of Music, said, per an official statement. “Honoring the past while also charting new ground aligns so well with my own artistic values, and I’m excited to lead the Schubert Club in its next chapter.”
Founded more than 140 years ago, the Schubert Club is among the country’s oldest arts organizations and presents its International Artist Series, Schubert Club Mix, and other programming at venues across the Twin Cities.
