The North/South Chamber Orchestra to Present ‘In Memoriam: George Floyd’ Concert

By Logan Martell

On June 29, 2021, members of The North/South Chamber Orchestra will give the first and last performance of their 2020-21 season.

Conducted by Max Lifchitz, the program will feature four recent works for string orchestra by American composers, all of which share a common theme of being inspired by the pain and turmoil of recent world events.

The works are Douglas Ovens’ “Song for US – In Memoriam: George Floyd,” which was written in the first week of June 2020; Rain Worthington’s “Within Deep Currents,” which relates the composer’s feelings and experiences during these times; Thomas Whitman’s “Immigrant Portraits,” which shares the plight of immigrants from three different nations; and Lifchitz’s “Brightness Aloft,” a set of variations on a 17th century Mexican melody.

The concert will be live streamed from St. John’s in The Village via YouTube, where it will be available to watch for free.

It is made possible through the support of the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, with additional support from the Zethus Fund, the Music Performance Trust Fund, and individual donors.
