The Ebell of Los Angeles Announces Partnership with Architecture Firm for Upgrade of Campus
By David SalazarThe Ebell of Los Angeles has announced a partnership with architecture firm Frederick Fisher and Partners (FF&P) to develop and implement a comprehensive upgrade of its historic 1927 Renaissance-style campus in the mid-Wilshire area.
The 94,000-square-foot campus, originally designed by architect Sumner Hunt, will celebrate its Centennial in 2027. The revitalization effort was partly prompted by a City of Los Angeles seismic safety ordinance requiring owners of older concrete structures to assess and mitigate earthquake risk. Beyond structural upgrades, FF&P has been charged with improving infrastructure, wayfinding, and ADA compliance, while envisioning how the campus can be elevated as a hub for performance, learning, culture, and community for the next hundred years.
“The retrofit and revitalization plan will thoughtfully honor the site’s historic legacy while ensuring The Ebell’s continued impact on women and Los Angeles,” said Dr. Stacy Brightman, Chief Executive Officer of The Ebell, per an official press release. “Frederick Fisher and Partners are uniquely positioned to steward architecturally significant cultural landmarks with both reverence and imagination.”
FF&P brings a portfolio of culturally significant projects to the engagement, including the Annenberg Community Beach House, MoMA PS1, the Sunnylands Historic Estate renovation, and the recently completed Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County expansion.
Since its founding at a time when women were largely excluded from civic and cultural leadership, The Ebell has served as a platform for women’s voices in Los Angeles.
