
Ebell of Los Angeles Announces Women’s History Month Events
By Afton MarkayThe Ebell of Los Angeles has announced its lineup for Women’s History Month.
Programming throughout March aims to celebrate the achievements, struggles and triumphs of women throughout history and today. Events include musical performances, conversations, art exhibits, and more.
The music specific events begin a performance given by Hers: Music Ensemble, featuring Karen Hogle Brown and Tamara Bevard. The ensemble is set to perform works by LA composers including Dale Trumbore, Reena Esmail, Brooke DeRosa, and Zanaida Robles paired with four historical women composers from Los Angeles such as Alma Mahler, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Mary Carr Moore, and Margaret Bonds.
Next is the world premiere of “We Can Do It!” by composer Brooke deRosa and librettist Velina Hasu Houston. Judy Louise Johnson directs a cast consisting of Amber Liekhus, Oriana Falla, and Karen Hogle Brown.
Vox Femina Los Angeles performs a concert entitled “Banned!” featuring adaptations of works like Toni Morrison’s “Beloved,” Juno Dawson’s “This Book is Gay!,” and the classic “Alice in Wonderland,” alongside a powerful new commission from composer Jennifer Lucy Cook, inspired by Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
