Tête à Tête Announces ‘The Opera Festival’ 2024 Lineup

The lineup for Tête à Tête’s ‘The Opera Festival’ 2024 has been announced.

Only opera performances are included in this article.

The festival opens with This performance of William Gardner’s and Matthew Green’s second opera “The Prisoner.” The cast features Emma Warner, Abbie Ward, William Gardner, and Michael Temporal-Darrel. Alexander Papp conducts and Eleanor Burke directs.

Performance Date: August 24, 2024

Kelly Poukens leads Alastair White’s opera “#CAPITAL.” The work is described as “a tale of dematerialization and symbolism: from the first time someone exchanged a token for an object, or a symbol — a word — for a being in the world — all the way through gold bars and bank notes, or the virtual reality of art — to Web3, avatars and Dragon City itself. It is the story of becoming something else — where everything is always possible.”

Will Gardner conducts Robin Fiedler and Wyatt Gaer’s “Serenoid,” starring Victoria Oruwari and Taryn Surratt. Edie Bailey directs.

Chuma Sijeqa stars in Ábel M.G.E. and Aubrey Lavender’s “Horse Person Opera.” Sam Redway-Wells directs.

Greg Arrowsmith and Bernadine Corrigan’s “Cipher” stars Michael Bell, Katharine Taylor-Jones, Graeme Danby, Isabelle Atkinson, and Jack Sandison. Elaine Tyler-Hall directs.

Eleanor Westbrook, Keir Cooper, and Rose Biggin’s “Star Quality” is an alternative opera for fixed media and live performers, based on new music for modified guitar and soprano voice.

Catherine Kontz’s “12HOURS” stars co-creator Rosie Middleton.

“Queer Love” features Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Sholto Biscoe-Taylor, and Hester Dart. This piece by Guy Harries and company was inspired by letters from queer archives and present-day interviews. It is devised by the composer in collaboration with the cast members.

Two operatic vignettes adapted from texts by Federico García Lorca “The Parting” and “Buster’s Trip” stars Naomi Kilby, James Schouten, Martin Nelson, Rosalind Dobson, Will Diggle, and Peter Lidbetter.

Sarah Parkin, Alexandra Dinwiddie, Thomas Litchev star in Gaia Aloisi and Fabrizio Funari’s “Aqua Tofana.”

Performance Date: September 22, 2024

Up next is “Rendezvous with Revenge” is a triple bill exploring subjects of revenge, betrayal and love with equal parts comedy and stylised drama. The three shows represent diverse musical styles, but have in common a musical language that embraces the nuance achieved with a chamber opera format.

A double-bill of Margarida Gonçalves’ “Heart of the Matter” and “The Acts of Brízida Vaz” is presented.

Roger Illingworth’s “Senses” and “You Can’t Kill The Spirit” is presented on a double-bill.

A staged libretto reading of a new opera in progress “I Shot Mussolini” by Madeleine Brooks tells the true story of Violet Gibson. Rachel Nic Thomás performs the lead role.

“Mount Herzog” by Marcello Palazzo tells the story of the famed director. Ben Watkins plays Herzog and Matt Pope takes on the role of Kinski. Scott Handy directs.

Performance Date: September 27, 2024

Eliran Kadoussi, Lore Lixenberg, Hestor Dart, and Rachel Roper present a dark, surreal comedy about the human relationship with technology and digital culture told through opera, video games, and poultry. “The Game” is written by Elif Karlidag and Sam Redway.

Performance Date: September 28, 2024

“Ghost” by Norrisette and Rosé Gold, Anna Appleby, and Emma Wheeler is based on the film of the same name by Izzy Pye.

An excerpt from the opera “Andrias Scheuchzeri,”  created by porte renaud is presented.

Closing out the festival is The Improvesarios “Improvised Opera.”
