The Teatro San Carlo di Napoli has announced another cast change for its production of “Tosca.”

The company noted that George Gagnidze will sing the role of Scarpia on April 20 and 23 replacing Gabriele Viviani who is ill.

Gagnidze sang the role of Scarpia in Napoli in January 2020 when the Edoardo De Angelis production premiered. He has performed the role at the Met 36 times and has also sung it at the Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

This marks the latest cast change of the production which saw Ildar Abdrazakov drop out due to personal issues. He was later replaced by Lucas Meachem, who was then forced to cancel due to illness. Finally, Gabriele Viviani was expected to sing all performances.

Gagnidze joins a cast that includes Oksana Dyka in the title role and Jonas Kaufmann in the role of Cavaradossi.

Viviani returns to the production for performances on April 27, 30, and May 3, 2022.
