Teatro San Carlo Announces Cast Change for ‘La Gioconda’

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro San Carlo di Napoli has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of “La Gioconda.”

The company said that Eve-Maud Hubeaux will sing the role of Laura replacing the originally announced Anita Rachvelishvili.

Hubeaux recently sang the role at the Salzburg Easter Festival and critics noted she is “captivating” as Gioconda’s revival.

The mezzo will once again join Anna Ntrebko and Jonas Kaufmann, who also performed the opera in Salzburg. She also joins Alexander Köpeczi, Kseniia Nikolaieva, and Ludovic Tézier. Pinchas Steinberg conducts the new production by Romain Gilbert.

“La Gioconda” opens on April 7 with a special 30th anniversary gala for Netrebko and will run through April 17. There will also be a second cast led by Lianna Haroutounian, Anna Maria Chiuri, Angelo Villari, and Ernesto Petti.

Rachvelishvili is expected to return to the stage for performances of “Aida” at the Bayerische Staatsoper on April 21.
