Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to Perform Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater

By Francisco Salazar

Michele Mariotti is set to conduct Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” on Feb. 20, 2024.

In a statement, Mariotti said, “Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’ and Stravinsky’s ‘Pulcinella’ are divided by almost two centuries of history, but show a very strong connection based precisely on Pergolesi’s music. The Stabat Mater is a masterpiece of classicism, an example of the crystalline purity of pain. We contrast this with the progenitor of Stravinskian neoclassicism, the ballet Pulcinella, with which the Russian composer abandons the popular music of his homeland and turns to the past to use it as a basis for the future.”

The concert will showcase soprano Maria Grazia Schiavo and Sara Mingardo, as well as Cameron Becker and Alexandros Stavrakakis.
