Teatro dell’Opera di Roma & Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Announce New initiative for Wagner Works

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia are set to present Wagner’s music in the coming month, teaming up for the projects.

Santa Cecilia will present “Die Walküre” under Daniel Harding, while the opera di Roma will showcase “Lohengrin.”

These two productions will be accompanied by joint initiatives: first, a special promotion has been planned for the public. Thanks to an agreement between the two Roman institutions, all ticket holders for “Die Walkure” or “Lohengrin,” as well as season ticket holders for the 2025-26 Santa Cecilia or Teatro dell’Opera seasons, will be able to purchase a ticket for the other opera at a 25 percent discount by presenting their ticket at the respective box offices, subject to availability. Among the other proposals, two exhibitions dedicated to the relationship between Wagner and Rome, set up at the two foundations, will display sketches, photos, letters, and period documents.

In a statement, Massimo Biscardi, President-Superintendent of Santa Cecilia, stated: “This initiative marks the beginning of a concrete dialogue between two institutions that share the same mission and a common vision: to promote music and culture in our city, enhancing their role locally and internationally. We are delighted to collaborate with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma on a project that unites the strengths of two great institutions serving the capital. Wagner, with his music that blends symphonic and theatrical dimensions, symbolically represents the meeting of our artistic identities. It is a sign of openness and confidence in the future, in the belief that together we can achieve much for music and for Rome.”

Francesco Giambrone, General Manager of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, added, “It is a great pleasure to share a project with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia that celebrates one of the greatest composers in history: it is an important sign of unity and sharing between the capital’s two great musical institutions. Opening our season with Lohengrin while Santa Cecilia presents Die Walküre means celebrating not only the power of Wagnerian theater and music, but also reaffirming the value of culture as a space for encounter and dialogue. Together, we offer audiences a journey that unites us under a shared vision: to make music a living, shared asset deeply rooted in the city, and this important collaboration strengthens the planning of our institutions. It is the first step on a shared path that we are building in the interest of our audiences and the city of Rome.”

“Die Walküre” will be performed on Oct. 23, and “Lohengrin” will open on Nov. 27, 2025.
