Teatro alla Scala Extends Riccardo Chailly’s Contract

By Francisco Salazar

Riccardo Chailly has extended his contract as Music Director of the Teatro alla Scala until the end of 2026.

Platea Magazine is reporting that the Board of Directors announced the news. The board will meet in May to discuss a successor. Some speculate that it could be Daniele Gatti, who was previously reported as the first choice.

Chailly will open the Teatro alla Scala’s 2025-26 season with “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” and will end his tenure at the end of 2026. He began his tenure at La Scala in 2017 and has since conducted every opening night with an emphasis on the Italian repertoire.

Next season, he is slated to conduct a new production of “Nabucco” as well as Shostakovich’s opera.
