Star-Studded Festival Castell de Peralada Announces Decision on 2020 Edition
By David SalazarThe Festival Castell de Peralada in Spain has announced that it has no intentions of moving forward with its 2020 edition.
The festival was set to open on July 2, 2020.
“We profoundly lament having to communicate that the 2020 festival will not take place this summer,” stated Isabel Suqué, the President of the Fundación Castell de Peralada in the formal announcement. “My brother and I are especially worried about the security and well-being of the festival’s workers, a concern that also extends to our audience and visiting artists. We must be complete secure that we can fulfill the sanitary requirements that will avoid the spread or resurgence of coronavirus, and at this moment of such uncertainty, we do not believe it possible.”
She also noted that the current uncertainty regarding international travel is another reason why it is impossible to guarantee the success of the festival.
The festival was set to feature a number of major stars including Jonas Kaufmann, Sondra Radvanovsky, Carlos Alvarez, Piotr Beczala, and Anita Rachvelishvili, among many others.
This is the latest of several major international festivals to close its doors in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. However, the Festival Castell de Peralada’s decision contrasts that of the Quincena Musical de San Sebastián and Festival International de Santander, both also in Spain. The two festivals recently confirmed their decision to move forward with their 2020 editions.
