Soundstreams to Open Season with ‘Garden of Vanished Pleasures’

By Logan Martell

On September 23, 2021, Soundstreams will open its 2021-22 season with “Garden of Vanished Pleasures.”

This new work, composed by Cecilia Livingston and Donna McKevitt, comes as part of the company’s 2021 Digital Residency at Crow’s Theatre. The work draws from the writings of Derek Jarman, English artist, filmmaker, and gay rights advocate, who created works of art during the height of the AIDS crisis. Director Tim Albery has devised this fully-staged production with members of the team behind “Hell’s Fury, The Hollywood Songbook.”

The cast includes sopranos Mireille Asselin and Lindsay McIntyre; mezzo Rebecca Cuddy; countertenor Daniel Cabena; violist Brenna Hardy-Kavanagh; and cellist Amahl Arulanandam. They will be accompanied by music director and pianist Rachael Kerr.

“The pandemic provoked us to develop new ways of engaging with audiences through digital platforms,” Founding Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney stated in a press release. “The Garden of Vanished Pleasures, which opens the season, is itself a poignant metaphor for what we have gone through: a reminder that we must come to terms with all that we have lost, at the same time as we plant hopeful seeds of rebirth and renewal.“

Tickets will be available for $20, or free with a Soundstreams Digital Pass for the season. The production will run until October 10, 2021, with the digital broadcast lasting about 75 minutes.
