Sonya Yoncheva Hints New Roles
By Francisco SalazarSonya Yoncheva has revealed she is looking to expand her repertoire into Wagnerian and Strauss roles.
In an interview with Forum Opera, the soprano revealed she would be interested in doing Elizabeth in “Tannhäuser” or Sieglinde in “Die Walküre” and also noted that she has been offered “Salome” but has turned it down. However, she left the possibility open and hopes to do the Marschallin in “Der Rosenkavalier.”
She also noted that while her voice is moving into heavier roles. She has a “Theodora” planned with William Christie in two years. She also said that she would also like to do more baroque operas like “Alcina” and Cleopatra in “Giulio Cesare.”
Yoncheva also said that she would love to do contemporary opera.
Yoncheva recently finished a run of “Tosca” at the Berlin State Opera, which she is expected to sing this summer at the Opéra de Paris. She sings the title role in ‘Norma” at the Bayerische Staatsoper and a number of gala concerts. The soprano is expecting her second child and will stop performing in July to take maternity leave. Her 2019-20 season begins in Germany followed by a production of “Il Pirata” at the Teatro Real.
