The Royal Opera House Covent Garden has announced its fall program schedule. For the purposes of this article, we will focus only on vocal works.

“4/4” is an evening of opera that has been curated by Director of Opera Oliver Mears and features performances of a wide range of music.

Handel’s “Apolo and Daphne” will feature Alexandra Lowe and Jonathan McGovern. Christian Curnyn will conduct. Gruber’s “Frankenstein!!” will spotlight tenor Allan Clayton. Ed Whitehead conducts the production by Richard Jones. Soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha will sing Barber’s “Knoxville Summer 1915.” Patrick Milne will conduct the production by Antony McDonald.  Finally, British mezzo-soprano Christine Rice will perform Britten’s final masterpiece “Phaedra.” Deborah Warner is the director.

Performance Date: Oct. 17, 2020

“New Dark Age” will follow. The one-person chamber opera by Hannah Kendall, “The Knife of Dawn,” will open the evening. The work will showcase baritone Peter Brathwaite. Natalie Murray Beale conducts the production by Ola Ince. Additionally, the works of Missy Mazzoli, Sivan Eldar, Anna Meredith and Anna Thorvaldsdottir will be featured.

Samantha Fernando’s opera “Current, Rising” takes place at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre. More details are to be announced.

Performance Date: Nov. 28, 2020

The solo-adaptation female mini-monodrama “Arianna a Naxos” by Haydn will spotlight British mezzo-soprano Stephanie Wake-Edwards. The event will be only available online.

Streaming Dates: Oct. 26 – Nov. 27, 2020

Live audiences will hear the recitals at the Linbury Theatre featuring Blaise Malaba, Andrés Presno and April Koyejo-Audiger.

Performance Date: October 29, 2020

Concert performances of Handel’s “Ariodante” will star Paula Murrihy, Chen Reiss, Gerald Finley, and Sophie Bevan. Christian Curnyn conducts.

Performance Dates:  Nov. 20-22, 2020

Finally, a concert performance of Verdi’s “Falstaff” will star Sir Simon Keenlyside and Sir Bryn Terfel. Sir Antonio Pappano will conduct. Full castings will follow in the coming weeks.

Performances will be accessible online for a global audience through live streams, and also for socially distanced live audiences at the Royal Opera House.
