Shakespeare Opera Theatre to Present ‘Hansel and Gretel’

By David Salazar

The Shakespeare Opera Theatre will present “Hansel and Gretel” in time for the holiday season.

The opera will star Kate Moss and Julia Silva in the title roles. Joining them are Amanda Wyand, Alicia Woodberry, and JP Gorski as the Witch, Gertrude, and Peter, respectively. Other cast members include Jordan Gilbert and Chuanyuan Liu. The covers for the production include Kathryn Brode and Maggie Ramsey.

Dr. Lori Lind directs and choreographs while Dr. Lisa Bloy is the vocal coach and conductor for the Humperdinck opera.

“‘Hansel and Gretel’ is a fairy tale opera, and of course, it’s based on the tale by the famous Grimm brothers,” Lind told OperaWire. “The music is more complex than the subject matter might make you think, and while children will definitely enjoy themselves, adults will, too! It’s in a clever English translation that embodies the original story, and the music really gives the singers something to sink their teeth into vocally. It’s just a beautiful, fun opera, to which you can bring the entire family. We’ve also got Bavarian holiday themed food and drink to enjoy before and during the show. The perfect combination to get you into the holiday spirit!”

The opera opens on Dec. 9 and 10 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in McLean, Virginia with two final performances on Dec. 16 at Grace the Plains Episcopal Church in The Plains, Virginia.

Later this season the company will present Verdi’s “Macbeth.”
