
Schmidt Vocal Arts Announces Winners of 2026 Undergraduate Competition
By David SalazarSchmidt Vocal Arts has announced the winners of its sixth annual undergraduate competition, with more than 280 singers from across the nation competing for more than $50,000 in cash prizes.
In the Upper Division, tenors Brett Hunter (Curtis Institute of Music), soprano Annabelle Sweet (Northwestern University), soprano Poppy Teague (Abilene Christian University), and soprano Dejah Watts (University of Kentucky) were named Winners, each receiving $5,000.
The final round judges were Sarah Fraser, VP of Fletcher Artist Management; Damien Geter, Music Director of Portland Opera; and bass-baritone Greer Grimsley.
In the Lower Division, soprano Jayden Greicius (Rice University), bass-baritone Caleb Mienk (Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University), bass-baritone Jordan Oney (Eastman School of Music), and soprano Katherine Ryan (Rice University) were named Winners.
The final round judges were Joseph Li, VP of Artistic Planning at Minnesota Opera; Nina Yoshida Nelsen, Artistic Director of Boston Lyric Opera; and tenor Limmie Pulliam.
Additional Finalist Awards of $700 each and Encouragement Awards of $350 each were presented across both divisions. Encouragement Awards of $350 each in the Upper Division went to bass-baritone Cameron Duggins (Northwestern University), soprano Olivia Howe (University of British Columbia), and mezzo-soprano Giuliana Leto (The Juilliard School). In the Lower Division, Encouragement Awards were presented to baritone Michael Banda (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), tenor Andrew Riedel (University of North Texas), and soprano Joanna Wilson (University of Houston).
All prizes are funded by the William E. Schmidt Foundation.
