Scandinavia House to Present ‘Freydís and Gudrid’

Scandinavia House in New York is set to present Jeffrey Leiser’s “Freydís and Gudrid,” an opera film, on July 16, 2024.

The stage version of opera made its world premiere on May 1, 2018, at the Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York after which a vocal and orchestral chamber version of “Freydís and Gudrid” was performed and recorded at Carnegie Hall in 2019. For the next two years, composer  After this, the work began being converted into a film, which took two years to complete.

Leiser wrote, composed, edited, directed, and produced the work alongside director of photography and visual effects Samuel Krueger, gaffer and camera operator Mark Pauley, camera operator Joshua F. Leonard, and production designer and VFX artist Jennilee Aromando. Andres Soto, who orchestrated and arranged “Freydís and Gudrid,” led the music production team including conductor Keith Chambers, Myles Rodenhouse who ran sound recording and mixing, and Mitchell McCarthy who arranged the piano-vocal reduction.

The film stars Micaëla Oeste and Kirsten Chambers (who was the original opera cast). They are joined by Bray Wilkins, Daniel Klein, Raymon Geis, Samuel Druhora, Bryan G. Davis, Michelle Jennings, Rachel Duval, Flavius Druhora, Luis Ramos, Rachel Yazzie, Leo Kubota, and Benairen Kane.

The film was created with the support of AFS. The opera album will be available on iTunes and Spotify on July 7, 2024.
