Rolando Villazón to Headline ‘El Árbol de la Gran Bufanda Roja’ Animated Short Film

By David Salazar

Tenor and director Rolando Villazón will voice a singing tree in the animated short film “El árbol de la gran bufanda roja” (“The Tree of the Big Red Scarf”), which premieres Friday, Oct. 30, on Instagram.

The film is a project of the nonprofit Corazón Latino, based in Washington, D.C. Mexican cartoonist José Trinidad Camacho Orozco, known as Trino, is the film’s animator and illustrator. Villazón’s tree silently witnesses the life of a family over time, and the story unfolds entirely through music and animation, without dialogue.

Corazón Latino founder and executive director Felipe Benítez brought Villazón and Trino together for the project. Filmmaker Stacy Whittle wrote and directed the short and serves as its music director. She also voices the baby.

It is Villazón’s third film collaboration with Corazón Latino, following projects shot in New York and Austria for the organization’s Stories of Trees platform.

“I have sung on many stages around the world, but this is the first time I have given my voice to an animated character! I hope this little film brings a smile to children and adults alike and reminds us how important trees are to all of us,” Villazón said, per an official press release.

Corazón Latino is also preparing free downloadable coloring materials and an educational discussion guide for teachers and families to accompany the film.
