By David Salazar

Florida-based Sarasota Opera is inviting opera lovers from around the world to be part of a special 30-year tradition.

On Jan. 26, 2021, the company will be doing a Zoom showcase in which all participants will join conductor Victor DeRenzi in a performance of “Va, pensiero” from “Nabucco.” The event starts at 8:30 p.m. with the performance starting at 8:50 to coincide with the time of Verdi’s death at 2:50 a.m. in Milan on Jan. 27, 1901.

The tradition has been around since 1991 with members of the company coming together on the anniversary of Verdi’s death to sing the famed choral passage. This is the 120th anniversary of the composer’s passing.

Those who wish to participate are encouraged to RSVP on the company’s Facebook page by 2 p.m. on Jan. 26. They will be provided with access to the musical score and lyrics for the piece as well.
