San Francisco Opera Announces Live Performances in 2021, Digital Premieres & Virtual Ring Cycle Festival

San Francisco Opera has announced that it will be returning to live performances starting in the Spring 2021.

The company will present a 90-minute drive-in version of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” directed by Matthew Ozawa starring Daniela Mack, Alek Shrader, Lucas Meachem, Laura Krumm, Philip Skinner, Kenneth Kellogg, and Catherine Cook. Roderick Cox makes his company debut at the podium.

The opera will be performed at the Marin Center.

Performance Dates: April 23 – May 15

The company will also present open-air concerts at the Marin Center with the San Francisco Opera’s resident artists who include sopranos Anne-Marie MacIntosh, Elisa Sunshine and Esther Tonea; mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh; tenors Zhengyi Bai, Christopher Colmenero and Christopher Oglesby; baritone Timothy Murray; bass Stefan Egerstrom and pianists Kseniia Polstiankina Barrad and Andrew King.

Performance Dates: April 29, May 6 & 13

Additionally, the company will present three original digital releases.

First up is “In Song,” a video series in which artists introduce their cultural experience and music that has shaped them.

First up will be “In Song: J’Nai Bridges,” which will feature on a medley of Spirituals as well as a performance of Schumann’s “Widmung.” The video also features pianist Damien Sneed, drummer Jonathan Barber, and bass player Michael Olatuja.

The series will also include videos by Jamie Barton, Amina Edris, and Pene Pati.

The company will also release its “Atrium Sessions” series, the first of which will feature soprano Rhoslyn Jones, mezzo-soprano Laura Krumm, baritones Edward Nelson and Efraín Solís, and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel.

Finally, the company will present “North Stage Door,” a new podcast that focuses on the creation of operas at San Francisco Opera. Episodes will last 45 minutes and featuring interviews with company insiders. The pilot episode will focus on the upcoming “Barbiere di Siviglia” performances at the Marin Center.

Finally, the company will present a 2018 production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle directed by Francesca Zambello via virtual platforms. The performances star Iréne Theorin, Greer Grimsley, Daniel Brenna, Brandon Jovanovich, Karita Mattila, Jamie Barton, Falk Struckmann, and Ronnita Miller, among others.

Streaming Dates for Operas: March 6-7 (“Das Rheingold”); March 13-14 (“Die Walküre”); March 20-21 (“Siegfried”); March 27-28 (Götterdämmerung”)

There will also be a slew of interviews, lectures, and other Ring related presentations throughout March. First up will be the opening night salute which will feature several team members of the 2018 Ring in discussion.

“Das Rheingold: I Saw the World End: Exploring Wagner’s Ring” will feature a lecture by San Francisco Opera Dramaturg Emeritus Dr. Clifford Cranna on the 28-year journey Wagner undertook to create his magnus opus. The series will focus on the first opera in the saga.

Wagnerism” will feature a chat between Alex Ross and Tony Kushner, moderated by San Francisco Opera Dramaturg Emeritus Dr. Clifford Cranna.

“Sitting Down with Siegmund and Sieglinde” will feature a conversation with Brandon Jovanovich and Karita Mattila led by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Joshua Kosman.

Dr. Clifford Cranna will present “Die Walküre: I Saw the World End: Exploring Wagner’s Ring,” focusing on the second opera in the series.

“Confronting Controversy: The Ring in the 21st Century” will be led by William Berger and will center on Wagner’s place in the 21st century.

Nina Stemme and Jane Eaglen will talk with Stephen A. Brown in “Becoming Brünnhilde.”

Dr. Clifford Cranna will present “Siegfried: I Saw the World End: Exploring Wagner’s Ring,” focusing on the third opera in the series.

Fred Plotkin and Jamie Barton will explore the Ring cycle through food in “Dining on the Rhine: Food, Wine, and Wagner’s Ring Cycle.”

Green Wagner: Environmental Themes and Challenges in Wagner’s Ring” will feature an interview with Francesca Zambello and Wagner scholar Kirsten Paige.

Kenneth Overton will speak with iconic singer Grace Bumbry about becoming the first Black singer to perform at the Bayreuth Festival in “Breaking Barriers at Bayreuth.”

Dr. Clifford Cranna will close out his series with “Götterdämmerung: I Saw the World End: Exploring Wagner’s Ring,” focusing on the final opera in the series.

“Kirsten Flagstad: A Brünnhilde for the ages” will feature a lecture by Paul Thomason, co-hosted by Kirsten Flagstad Museum Director Annika E. Englehart.

Francesca Zambello, Naomi André, and Ronita Miller will discuss “Feminism and the Ring,” exploring the complex female characters found in the tetralogy.

There will be a closing night festival toast that will include live discussions with several Ring participants and artists, including Zambello, Miller, and André.
