By David Salazar

San Diego Opera is set to present the west coast premiere of “The Aging Magician.”

The premiere, which has been in the making for several years now but was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19, will finally have its day with San Diego Opera on May 13, 2022. There will be additional showcases on May 14, 2022.

The opera will feature the Brooklyn Youth Chorus as well as Rinde Eckert, both in their respective company debuts. Also making debuts with the company are director Juian Crouch and conductor Dianne Berkun Menaker, who will lead the Attacca Quartet. The opera’s music will be created by Paola Prestini.

The opera tells the story of Harold, a clockmaker nearing the end of his life. While working on his children’s book “The Aging Magician,” he reaches a crucial point in the story and has to make a major decision. He is then transported to a magical place where fiction and reality come together.

The opera was originally set to have its west coast premiere at San Diego Opera on March 13, 2020.
