Saioa Hernández and Maria José Siri will replace Anna Netrebko in the upcoming revival of Verdi’s “Nabucco” at the Wiener Staatsoper.

The company noted that Siri will sing the role of Abigaille on Nov. 1 and 6 while Hernández will take it on during the Nov. 9 and 12 performances. 

The news comes days after Netrebko was forced to cancel her role debut as Abigaille due to an urgent shoulder surgery that caused her to cancel her November engagements.

Hernández is a recognized Abigaille who has performed the role at the Verdi Festival in Parma and at the Semperoper Dresden while Siri has sung it at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro Petruzzelli.

Both sopranos join a cast that include Amartuvshin Enkhbat and Placido Domingo sharing the title role, Roberto Tagliavini, and Massimo Giordano who replaces Alessandro Liberatore as Ismaele. Paolo Carignani conducts.

Netrebko is expected to return to the stage in December for the opening of the Teatro alla Scala’s 2021-22 season.
