OPERA America Names Next President & CEO

By David Salazar

Michael J. Bobbitt has been named OPERA America’s next President and CEO.

He will assume leadership on Jan. 1, 2026, under a five-year contract. The announcement was made by Board Chair Lee Anne Myslewski on behalf of the Board of Directors of OPERA America.

Bobbitt, a trained trumpeter and classical vocalist, joins OPERA America from the Mass Cultural Council in Boston, where he has served as Executive Director since 2021. He also previously pursued artistic careers in dance and musical theater, and continues to work as an award-winning playwright, director, and choreographer.

Bobbitt reflected, “I am thrilled to join OPERA America and build on Marc Scorca’s extraordinary legacy. I look forward to supporting the opera field so this art form, and all its players, can thrive nationally and internationally.”

Bobbitt succeeds Marc A. Scorca, who will conclude his 35-year tenure at the end of 2025 and has been named President Emeritus of OPERA America. Scorca will remain available in an advisory capacity, providing continuity for the organization and the field. He will also edit his lectures, webinars, and workshops into resources and contribute annotations to OPERA America’s Oral History Project.

“I extend warm congratulations and every good wish for success to Michael as he leads OPERA America and the field into the future,” added Scorca. “It’s a tremendous honor to be named President Emeritus, and I look forward to supporting the transition.”
