Saint Thomas Church to Ring In 2018 Season with Brahms Requiem

By Logan Martell

The church of Saint Thomas will be opening its Spring 2018 season on Thursday, March 22, with a seldom-heard arrangement of Brahms’ “A German Requiem.” This performance will feature the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, along with soloists Hyesang Park (soprano) and John Brancy (baritone), as well as pianists Michal Biel and Katelan Terrell.

The next performance will be on March 26, for the first of two meditations on the organ in celebration of Holy Week. These performances will explore the ecclesiastical influence of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach on some of the 19th century’s most prolific composers, namely Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann. The first performance will be played by Associate Organist Benjamin Sheen; the second performance, on March 27, will be played by Organist and Director of Music Daniel Hyde.

All performances will be held at Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue and West 53rd street. Purchase of tickets are required for the Brahms concert, whereas the Holy Week Meditation concerts will only request a donation in lieu of tickets.
