Roberto Alagna, Catherine Hunold, Anaïk Morel & Patrizia Ciofi Lead Opéra de Saint-Étienne’s 2021-22 Season

Opéra de Saint-Étienne in France has announced its 2021-22 season. Here is a look.

Opera

Massenet‘s “La Vierge” will star Irina Kyshliaruk, Amélie Robins, Lucie Roche, Christophe Berry, Thomas Marc Scoffoni, and Catherine Hunold in the title role. Alexandra Cravero conducts the production by Laurent Touche.

Performance Date: Oct. 1, 2021

Alexandra Marcellier sings the title role in Puccini‘s “Madama Butterfly” alongside Florian Laconi who takes on the role of Pinkerton. The cast also includes Valeria Tornatore as Suzuki and Yann Toussaint as Sharpless. Giuseppe Grazioli conducts the production by Emmanuelle Bastet.

Performance Dates: Nov. 5 – 9, 2021

Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” spotlights Amélie Grillon, Alexandra Hewson, Jazmin Black-Grollemund, Ronan Debois, Denis Mignien, Sébastien Bellegy, and François Rollin. Thibaut Maudry conducts the production by Denis Mignien.

Performance Date: Dec. 17, 2021 

Ambroise Thomas’ “Hamlet” is set to star Jeanne Crousaud as Ophélie and Jérôme Boutillier in the title role. The cast will be rounded out by Jiwon Song, Emanuela Pascu, Jérémy Duffau, Thomas Dear, Yoann Le Lan, Jean-Gabriel Saint-Martin, Antoine Foulon, and Dominic Bevan. Jacques Lacombe conducts the production by Nicola Berloffa.

Performance Dates: Jan. 26 – 30, 2022

The company will present a double bill with Poulenc’s “La Voix humaine” and Escaich’s “Point d’orgue.” Patrizia Ciofi, Pierre-Yves Pruvot, and Peter Tantsits star with Giuseppe Grazioli conducting the production by Olivier Py.

Performance Dates: March 4 – 8, 2022

Victorin Joncières’ opera “Lancelot” stars Anaïk Morel as Guinèvre, Tomasz Kumiega as Arthus, and Thomas Bettinger in the title role. The cast also includes Frédéric Caton, Philippe Estèphe, Camille Tresmontant, and Olivia Doray. Hervé Niquet conducts the production by Jean-Romain Vesperini.

Performance Dates: May 6 – 10, 2022

Vannina Santoni headlines Verdi’s “La Traviata” alongside Thomas Bettinger as Alfredo Germont and André Heyboer as Giorgio Germont. Giuseppe Grazioli conducts the production by Jean-Louis Grinda.

Performance Dates: June 12 – 16, 2022

Soprano Irina Kyshliaruk, countertenor Rémy Bres, and baritone Valdis Jansons perform Orff’s “Carmina Burana” alongside the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and Chorus of the Opéra de Saint-Étienne. Mihhail Gerts conducts.

Tenor Roberto Alagna will perform arias from the French, Italian, German and Russian repertoire. Fabrizio Carminati conducts.

Bass-baritone Vincent Le Texier presents works by Schubert and Wagner alongside pianist Ancuza Aprodu.

Soprano Véronique Gens sings music by Berlioz, Massenet, Chausson, Fauré, Lekeu, Widor, Guglielmi, Ropartz, Saint-Saëns, Hahn, and Messager. I Giardini accompanies.

Musical and vocal works

Offenbach’s operetta “Monsieur Choufleuri Restera Chez Lui ” features Nicolas Bercet, Laetitia Ayrès, Georges Demory, Hervé Roibin, Dorothée Thivet, and Alexis Meriaux. Jeyran Ghiaee accompanies on piano and Guillaume Nozach directs.

Performance Date: Nov. 8, 2021

The Pajama Game” features music by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The musical is a co-production with the Théâtre de La Renaissance, Opéra national de Lyon, Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse, Angers Nantes Opéra, and Mahagonny Cie.
