Teatro alla Scala Cancels Opening Night of ‘Faust’ Due to Strike

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala has canceled the opening night of “Faust” on Oct. 20 due to a strike.

The Fondazione Teatro alla Scala said that due to the worker’s strike, there was no way to perform the new production.

Ticketholders who purchased their tickets online will be reimbursed automatically. Meanwhile, for tickets purchased at the box office and for “Opera Turno Prime” subscriptions, ticket holders will be able to request a refund of the pro-rata subscription value corresponding to the performance by sending an email to rimborsi@fondazionelascala.

The news comes days after a workers’ assembly called by the Cgil, Cisl, Uil and Fials unions, saw 449 out of 450 participants vote to authorize a strike. According to reports the dispute concerns the renewal of the theatre’s contract, which will run for three years from 2027. Workers are demanding a 15 percent rise in gross annual pay and they want a meeting with the theatre’s board of directors.

“Faust” will now open on Oct. 24 and will star Marina Rebeka, Alex Esposito, Vittorio Grigolo, Marcela Rahal, Ernesto Petti, Hyeonsol Park, and Xhieldo Hyseni. Daniele Rustioni conducts and Johannes Erath directs.
