‘Remorse’ (‘歌剧’) Makes New York Premiere

By Afton Markay

“Remorse” (“伤逝,”) a reimagined adaptation of the modern Chinese opera, “伤逝”  is set to make its New York debut.

This new work is inspired by Lu Xun’s 1925 novella. The story is set in the springtime of 1920s Beijing. As the seasons change, so do the fortunes of Zijun and Juansheng. Summer is filled with love and hope, but autumn brings challenges. By winter, the cold winds of reality extinguish the couples’ ideals of a life together.

Alumni of the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Royal Academy of Music, China Conservatory of Music, and Central Conservatory of Music. Together make up the cast. The 2025 production of “Remorse” introduces the Narrator, a new role serving as the voice of the story and the embodiment of the author.

Community outreach events took place last year in collaboration with Chinatown-based organizations and bilingual promotional campaigns. Post-performance discussions and workshops are scheduled to deepen audience engagement, fostering dialogue on the opera’s themes and cultural context.

The New York premiere of “Remorse’ takes the stage at Dixon Place from Feb. 7 to Feb. 9, 2025.
