Portland Opera Postpones & Cancels 2020-21 Productions

Portland Opera has announced major changes to its 2020-21 season due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

The company announced that it would be postponing its production of “Frida.” The company had originally planned to present the work via its digital channel but has now delayed the production in hopes of showcasing it with a live, socially distanced audience during the summer. More details on the future of “Frida” will be revealed in February.

Meanwhile, the company’s “Il Trovatore” production has been canceled altogether. The opera featured a chorus of 48, an orchestra of 65, in addition to soloists and production company members.

“After having evaluated a variety of performance alternatives for Il Trovatore, including outdoor concerts, reduced versions, and live-streamed options in anticipation of loosened assembly restrictions by May, we sadly had to come to the conclusion that they were not viable under the currently foreseeable guidelines,” stated Daniel Biaggi, Interim Artistic Director, in a press release. “Instead of showcasing our full chorus and orchestra as combined artistic forces, we look forward to featuring them in smaller ensembles during the summer months.”

The company did note that there were plans to move ahead with smaller productions throughout the summer months. There will be Resident Artist Recitals throughout January and February via the company’s digital channels as well as “Journeys to Justice” in April.
