Polish National Opera to Present ‘María de Buenos Aires’

The Polish National Opera is set to perform Piazzolla’s “María de Buenos Aires.”

The tango operita, which will be performed under Piotr Staniszewski, will star Damian Kwiatkowski as el Duende, Natalia Kawałek in the title role, and Łukasz Karauda as Payador.

Wojciech Faruga, artistic director of the Polish Theater in Bydgoszcz, will direct the work. For the upcoming production, Faruga will from the religiousness inherent in the work and concentrate on the poetic libretto of the work, emphasizing the contemporary overtones of the text.

South American culture is shown not only in its traditional Christian-Catholic version but also as a world steeped in mysticism, superstitions, a kind of melting pot of indigenous beliefs, and Catholic and African-American spirituality.

“María de Buenos Aires” will be performed between March 16 and April 29 2023.
