
Pittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn to Retire
By Francisco SalazarPittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn has announced he will retire after Pittsburgh Opera’s 2025-26 season.
Hahn announced during yesterday’s Board of Directors meeting. Hahn began his tenure with the Pittsburgh Opera’s General Director in 2008 and has served as its Artistic Director since 2000.
Hahn began his career in opera in 1983 as a Rehearsal Administrator at the San Francisco Opera and then managed the San Francisco Opera Center. After his 13-year tenure in San Francisco, he served as Artistic Administrator at Los Angeles Opera.
In his role as General Director, he helped expand the repertoire, introducing Baroque and contemporary operas to the Pittsburgh audience. Among the world premieres that premiered during Hahn’s tenure included “The Summer King,” “Savage Winter” and “In a Grove.”
Hahn also built the Pittsburgh Opera’s Resident Artist training program into one of the nation’s best.
Hahn’s tenure will close with a production of “Falstaff” and on May 16, 2026, the Maecenas Gala will be held at Carnegie Hall, which will feature a tribute to Hahn.
