By Afton Wooten

Pittsburgh Opera announces Gene Welsh as the new Board of Directors President, and Hilda Fu, Paul Gitnik, and Dominic Rupprecht as Board members.

Welsh took the helm on July 1, starting Pittsburgh Opera’s new fiscal year. Pittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn says on Welch, “His leadership and dedication will serve us well as we continue to bring world-class opera to the greater Pittsburgh community.”

He follows in the footsteps of previous Board President Dr. Donald R. Fischer. “Don did a fantastic job as Board President,” said Welsh in a press release. “His term included the entirety of the COVID pandemic. I am grateful to be entering a situation where the organization not only has a strong artistic product, but also a strong balance sheet and community support.”

Fu, who has previously served on the Board, is the founder and president of Luminari, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that promotes community engagement by specializing in inspirational teen summer programs. Also returning to the board is attorney, business owner, software developer, professor, and civic leader Gitnik. Rupprecht is a Policyholder Advocate and Litigation Partner at Reed Smith, where he litigates insurance coverage disputes on behalf of policyholders nationwide. He is also the vice chair of the River City Brass Band’s Board.

Pittsburg Opera’s 2023-24 season opens with Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” on October 14.
