Piotr Beczala has canceled the final performance of Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Beczala is currently on vocal rest after vocal chord issues caused by a burst blood vessel. While the tenor returned to the stage in Hamburg for a concert with Angela Gheorghiu, he previously announced that he would not be able to rehearse and perform a fully-staged performance of an opera, cancelling the first night.

For the second performance scheduled on Oct. 1, Charle Castronovo will replace Beczala.

Castronovo is currently performing Alfredo in “La Traviata” at the Bayerische Staatsoper. He opened the Wiener Staatsoper’s 2019-20 season in the role with OperaWire noting, that Castronovo “brought an impassioned tone that he carried throughout the evening.” This season, the tenor is slated to perform at the Royal Opera and Bayerische Staatsoper.

Castronov joins a cast that includes Mariangela Sicilia and Noel Bouley.

Beczala returns to the stage this month for a recital tour through Germany, Austria, and Spain.
