Peter Mattei, Freddie De Tommaso, Angela Meade & Ekaterina Semenchuk Headline Verbier Festival’s 2022 Season

The Verbier Festival has announced its 2022 season, featuring operas and several concerts. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on vocal works.

Operas

Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni” kicks off the festival with Olga Peretyatko as Donna Anna, Magdalena Kožená as Donna Elvira, Bogdan Volkov as Don Ottavio, Mikhail Petrenko as Leporello, Alexandros Stavrakakis as Il Commendatore, Julien Van Mellaerts as Masetto, Fatma Said as Zerlina, and Peter Mattei in the title role. Gábor Takács-Nagy conducts.

Performance Date: July 16, 2022

Freddie De Tommaso sings Riccardo in Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” alongside Angela Meade as Amelia, Ludovic Tézier as Renato, Ekaterina Semenchuk as Ulrica, and Ying Fang in the role of Oscar. Gianandrea Noseda conducts.

Concerts & Recitals

British tenor Freddie De Tommaso presents an opera soirée with melodies and opera arias from Puccini, Liszt, Verdi, and Tosti alongside pianist Jonathan Papp.

Liv Redpath, Ema Nikolovska, Aj Glueckert, and Mikhail Petrenko perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor Op. 125. Gábor Takács-Nagy conducts.

Thomas Hampson performs Kathrine Kressmann Taylor’s “Address Unknown” alongside Evgeny Kissin.

Ying Fang, Magdalena Kožená, Stanislas de Barberyac, and Alexandros Stavrakakis present Mozart’s Requiem in D minor K. 626 and Ave verum corpus in D minor K. 618 alongside pianist Sir András Schiff.

Performance Date: July 20, 2022

Countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński brings his artistry to the Festival with a program of songs from Polish Romantic composers Stanisław Moniuszko and Mieczysław Karłowic, alongside repertoire from the Baroque period. Michał Biel plays a piano.

VFA Atelier Lyrique and soloists give a recital.

Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff presents his program “For You.”

Bass Mikhail Petrenko sings Mussorgsky’s “Songs and Dances of Death” alongside conductor Klaus Mäkelä, pianist Daniil Trifonov, violist Blythe Teh Engstroem, and violinist Sergei Dogadin.

Performance Date: July 24, 2022

Countertenors Jakub Józef Orliński and Bruno de Sá sing music from the baroque and classical periods alongside conductor Reinhard Goebel, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, and clarinetist Martin Fröst.

Tenor Ian Bostridge sings music by Schumann and pianist Brad Mehldau.

Performance Date: July 24, 2022

Soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci performs Poulenc’s “La Voix humaine” with Claudio Vandelli conducting the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra.

Performance Date: July 27, 2022

Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk, cellist Mischa Maisky, and pianist Semion Skigin will present works by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Borodin & Mussorgsky.

Finally, VFA Atelier Lyrique will perform Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” alongside conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky.
