In continuation of the 2019-20 Great Performances Series, PBS will present the Live in HD broadcast of Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck” from the Metropolitan Opera on Sunday, May 3, 2020.

The broadcast will kick off at 12 p.m. EDT. The cast includes baritone Peter Mattei in the title role with Elza van den Heever as Marie. Other cast members include Gerard Siegel, Tamara Mumford, and Christopher Ventris.

The work was conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Of the production, OperaWire’s review stated, “Overall, it is truly challenging to assess this evening. In many ways, the sensory overload that you experience throughout is exactly what you might want from a night at the opera. And yet, with such a challenging work, the delivery of this production makes it very difficult to interact with the opera on an emotional and intellectual level. You constantly feel like you’re trying to keep up with a fast-moving train. On some level there is an understanding that this is a ride you probably have to take again to get more out of it. But the first trip might leave you so drained and lacking in payoff that you might not want to.

Next up on the PBS Great Performances from the Metropolitan Opera will showcase “Porgy and Bess,” and “Agrippina.”
