Palau de Les Arts Names New Music Director

Sir Mark Elder has been appointed Music Director of the Palau de les Arts.

He will take over the position on Sept. 1, 2025, succeeding James Gaffigan who announced he would conclude his tenure as Music Director at the close of the 2024-25 season. Elder will be the Music Director until the 2028-2029 season.

He made his debut with the company in 2022. During his first season as Music Director he will conduct two operas and two Symphony programs. During his second season with the company, he will add a third symphony concert to his schedule.

In a statement, Artistic Director Jesús Iglesias Noriega said, “Sir Mark Elder is one of the biggest names on the international music circuit. His formidable professional career, immeasurable musical background, and his impeccable professional discipline predict a period of excellence, growth and success for the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and, also, for Les Arts.”

Elder was Music Director of the Hallé from 2000 to 2024 and is now Conductor Emeritus. He became the Principal Guest Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2022.
