Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Appoints Sir Mark Elder as Principal Guest Conductor

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway has appointed British Sir Mark Philip Elder as Principal Guest Conductor, from August 1, 2022, to July 31, 2025.

Elder was knighted in 2008 and an Oliver Award in 1991 for his outstanding work at the English National Opera. In addition to his work as music director of ENO, Elder has also been a principal guest conductor of the Birmingham City Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

“It is a special pleasure for me to be invited to participate in the development of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and I am delighted to join in such an exciting time in its long history, ”Elder said in a press statement.

“This is a unique opportunity for us, to have a Nestor, a man of wisdom and great experience. A master in British musical life. The Bergen Philharmonic will benefit from his brilliance and passion, ”added Bernt Bauge, Executive Director of the Orchestra.

Elder’s appointment kicks off fall of 2022 with performances of Delius’ “A Mass of Life.”
