Oregon Symphony Explores Cultural Landscapes in ‘Notations’ Series

By Logan Martell

On July 2021, Oregon Symphony launched its new digital series “Notations.”

The series explores the relationship between musical expression and culture, and will draw from the rich tapestry of music in America. Each episode will follow one of five Oregon musicians, with personal stories and performances which reflect their development and unique perspective as an artist.

Episode one will feature M. Ward, a folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Mexico. Episode two will feature violinist Keiko Araki, and her experience growing up in Canada while exploring her Japanese and Chinese heritage. Episode three will feature Japanese percussionist and composer Andy Akiho and the formation of his avant-garde style, performing one of the first songs he ever wrote. Episode four will feature OS violinist Ines Volgar in her immigration story through Eastern Europe and Venezuela to arrive at Portland, Oregon. Episode five will feature Jazz artist Darrell Grant and his arrival to Portland, the Black community, and the impact of gentrification on the local Jazz scene.

“We are excited to showcase the diversity of Oregon artists and the experiences and traditions that influence the work they create,” says Scott Showalter, Oregon Symphony President and CEO. “Through digital programs like ‘Notations’, Oregon Symphony highlights the intricate cultural fabrics that weave our community together through the power of music.”
