Opera Revue Announces New Parody ‘A Theme Song for the Loblaws Boycott: Les MisérLoblaws’

By Afton Wooten

Opera Revue has announced its newest parody, “A Theme Song for the Loblaws Boycott: Les MisérLoblaws.”

“Les MisérLoblaws” is an operatic parody set to the tune of “At the End of the Day” from “Les Miserables.” Performers include  Danie Friesen, Claire Elise Harris, Gregory Finney, and Alexander Hajek, who also served as lyricist. Michael McKenzie is the audio engineer. The video version of “Les MisérLoblaws” includes subtitles.

“We chose the music of ‘Les Miserables’ to ‘parody’ because the anger, starvation, and desperation that existed in revolutionary France is becoming an all too familiar scene here in Canada. Food bank usage is up at an alarming rate while grocery chain monopolies are posting record profits. Price gouging will be met with public ridicule and hopefully a meaningful boycott. ‘Do you Hear the People Sing?'” said Hajek in an official press release.

Since 2017, Opera Revue has been dedicated to introducing opera and art song to people who have never heard it before in a casual, cost-friendly setting. The company frequently is heard in bar settings. Upcoming performances are scheduled for May 12, at Reid’s Distillery in Toronto and at Granite Brewery on May 26.
