Opéra Queens to Present ‘Tanya’s Secret’

By Francisco Salazar

Canada’s Opéra Queens is set to “Tanya’s Secret” at the Betty Oliphant Theatre.

The opera, which will be performed on August 26 and 28, is queer-trans adaptation of gay composer Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” and will feature Ukrainian art songs by Lysenko. The production will raise funds for Kyiv Pride.

Funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council, “Tanya’s Secret” will feature a majority of queer-trans and IBPOC cast.

Mike Fan, aka drag diva Tanya Smania, will sing the lead role of Tatyana Larina with Georgios Iatrou, aka Nina Naï, as Eugene Onegin. Christina Yun and Alexander Cappellazzo will perform Lensky, Corinne DeJong and Louise Floyd perform Olga, and Gremin is sung by mezzos Marianne Bendig and Catharin Carew.

Bridget Ramzy will direct the production and will feature pianists Cecilia Nguyen Tran and Tina Faye.
