Opera Memphis Presents ‘Variations on a Theme: Gershwin and Friends’

By Afton Wooten

In part of Opera Memphis’ new concert series, “Variations on a Theme” will present “Gershwin and Friends” for its November concert.

The cast features Philip Himebook, Marcus King, Kayla Oderah, Marquita Richardson, Shelbi Sellers, and Dexter Tutor. In honor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming show featuring Gershwin and Kurt Weill, the night will include favorites like “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Mack the Knife,” and “Someone to Watch Over Me,” along with some hidden gems.

The “Variations on a Theme” series explores music from across opera, musical theater, and vocal music in all its forms. Each unique evening will feature music inspired by an upcoming event in the Memphis cultural calendar in collaboration with partners like Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and Theatre Memphis.

Two concerts will be held at the Opera Memphis Headquarters on Nov. 10 and 11.
